Heats up a dish nicely!
By Steven A. Peterson
I like to spice foods up, when I cook for myself (my family doesn’t appreciate my adding heat to their dishes). One of the easiest ways to do this is to use crushed red pepper in enough quantity to add a nice heat to the dish (I use this when I make omelets or egg sandwiches for myself, for example).
McCormick is one of the dependable brand names that I use (there are a couple other brands that I use, too, depending on which one is easiest to get at a particular store).
This product becomes a versatile addition to many dishes for me. Am I making a soup? Do I want some kick to it? I add some flakes. When making a spaghetti sauce, do I want it to leave a little burn behind after I swallow the dish? I add some flakes. What about chili? A little red pepper does the trick of heating the dish up.
Anyhow, I do enjoy heat to a dish. Unless I’m adventurous enough to gamble with habaneros (The first time I added some habanero to an egg dish, I didn’t realize how hot this pepper was! I had a burn that lasted 15 minutes or so as well as a brow that sweated for the same length of time!), this does nicely.
